Apple Bakers, start your ovens!
Get ready for the second annual Farmington Farmers Market’s Apple Dessert Bake-Off, which takes place on Saturday, September 20.
The idea for the Bake-Off came from our Market Volunteers, who generated lots of ideas to celebrate Farmington’s Bicentennial last year. Apples were an important crop for settlers, so an apple dessert contest seemed like a natural.
Last year we had more than two dozen bakers present their pies, tarts, crumbles, crisps, cookies and a few surprises. The Bake-Off has just one requirement: All recipes must use fresh apples.
To get the apple rolling, email AppleBakeoff@gmail.com with the name of your dessert and a brief description. Our reply is your confirmation that you’re in.
Please bring your entry to the Market between 9 and 10 a.m. on September 20. Tables will be set up either in Riley Park north of the Sundquist Pavilion or in the pavilion itself, depending on weather.
Since overall appearance is one of the judging criteria, please bring uncut pies or other desserts or multiples of such baked goods as cookies. You are also welcome to bring two complete desserts – one for presentation, one to be tasted by the judges. But a second one is not necessary.
Our panel of Blue Ribbon Judges will then get to work, following these criteria:
Taste, Appearance, Use of Apples and Creativity.
Judging will begin at 10 a.m., to be immediately followed by the announcement of winners and the award ceremony.
The three top winners will receive rosette ribbons; three others will be designated as special winners. All others will receive a participation ribbon.
Please bring a copy of your recipe or email one to AppleBakeoff@gmail.com. We’ll share some of them on our website.
And include any special story connected to them, such as it was your grandmother’s recipe, your kids loved them, etc.
We’re looking forward to tasting your entries!
