Apple Dessert Bake-Off is back with new date – October 11 – and new format

After much thought and discussion, the organizers of the Farmers Market’s Apple Dessert Bake-Off – baking pro Monica Ingles (Kitchen Creations) and Market events planner Peggy Castine – have revised the rules for this year’s bake-off. Please read carefully. Your thoughts are welcomed and encouraged. Email us at applebakeoff@gmail.com.

NEW FORMAT!

This year we’re accepting contestants in TWO divisions – Professional bakers and Home bakers.

Professional bakers bake in certified kitchens and sell or have sold their baked goods to the public.

Home bakers bake in non-certified kitchens and share their baked goods with friends and family at no cost.

NEW DATE!

The event HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED to October 11. BUT you must be registered by OCTOBER 6.

To register, just email applebakeoff@gmail.com by October 6 and say which category you’re entering, Pro or Home, and the title of your dessert. Our reply is your confirmation that you’re in.

ON BAKE-OFF DAY, OCTOBER 11

We’ll be set up in the north part of Riley Park near Grand River. Entries must arrive between 9 and 10 a.m. on October 11. Judging will begin at 10. Winners will be announced and ribbons awarded between 11:30 and noon, depending on how many entries we have.

JUDGING: Our judges will consider Taste, Appearance, Use of Apples and Creativity.

OUR EMCEE will again be Farmington Mayor Joe LaRussa, who appreciates apples in all formats.

MORE INFO:

  • Previous winners are welcomed to compete again BUT WITH NEW RECIPES.

  • First-, second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded in each division. Other ribbons will be awarded at the judges’ discretion. ALL OTHER BAKERS will receive a participation ribbon.

  • We would love to get a brief description of your dessert, including how the apples are used, but it’s not required. Any personal anecdotes are also welcome but not required. Copies of the recipes are optional; we will try to publish any we get on the Market’s website.

  • Since overall appearance is one of the judging criteria, please bring uncut pies or other desserts or multiples of such baked goods as cookies. You are also welcome to bring two complete desserts – one for presentation, one to be tasted by the judges. But a second one is not necessary.

Any questions, please email us at applebakeoff@gmail.com.

Thank you to our new sponsor, Kitchen Creations of downtown Farmington, for their ideas and support.
